For a file to work effectively, it must be harder than the steel it is cutting. This is the basic principle of filing: if both materials have similar hardness, the file will slide without biting and will wear out quickly without producing results. Most inexpensive files are simply too soft to cut into the high-hardness tempered steels used in quality forged tools.

The 200 mm smooth triangular Pferd file is made from steel hard enough to cut into tempered steels between 57 and 62 HRC — precisely the hardness range of the cutting edges we sell (axes, sickles, hoes). Its cut 3 (“smooth”), with fine parallel teeth, provides controlled cutting that removes only a small amount of material with each stroke. It is ideal for restoring a slightly chipped edge, refining a burr after initial use, or maintaining a blade edge regularly without needing a grinder.

Its 200 mm length provides good support along the full length of an axe or billhook edge, ensuring a steady motion and consistent results.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

✅ Smooth triangular file — ideal for angles and tight areas

✅ Fine cut — clean finish without tearing

✅ Length 200 mm — good balance between precision and control

✅ Hardened steel — effective cutting on hard materials

✅ Single cut — gradual material removal

USE

  • Sharpening and regular maintenance of hardened steel blades: axes, sickles, billhooks, hoes
  • Reworking slightly chipped or dulled edges
  • Finishing after rough grinding or bastard filing
  • Always work with a forward stroke only — never apply pressure on the return stroke to avoid premature wear
  • Clean the workpiece before filing, especially if scale, rust or dirt is present

MAINTENANCE

  • Clean teeth regularly with a wire brush to prevent clogging
  • Store separately to avoid damage to the teeth
  • Keep dry — file steel is sensitive to moisture and can corrode
