For a file to be effective, it must be harder than the steel it cuts. This is the basic principle of filing: if both materials have similar hardness, the file will slide without biting and will wear out quickly without results.
The PFERD smooth flat file (250 mm) is made from steel hard enough to cut hardened steels between 57 and 62 HRC — precisely the hardness range of the cutting edges we sell (axes, sickles, hoes). Its cut 3 (“smooth”) with fine parallel teeth ensures controlled material removal.
It is ideal for restoring a slightly chipped edge, removing burrs after initial use, or maintaining an edge without using a grinder.
Its 250 mm length provides good support along the full edge of an axe or billhook, ensuring consistent movement and even results.
