Surface weeding is not enough. A dandelion cut 3 cm down will regrow from its tap root. A thistle half-pulled comes back stronger. To get rid of deep-rooted weeds for good, you need to extract the whole root — and that is exactly what the Felco 442 does.
Its forged boron steel blade, with its distinctive snake-tongue shape, is narrow, long and tapered. It drives precisely into the soil alongside the root without disturbing the surrounding earth, then a gentle rocking motion levers the root out along its full length. The plant comes out whole, cleanly, leaving no fragment behind that could regrow.
Forged boron steel — the same material as the Felco 401 trowel — is harder and more wear-resistant than ordinary carbon steel. It cuts through compact, clay-heavy soil as easily as light earth, without flexing or dulling. At 124 g and 32.5 cm, the tool is light, precise and one-handed. The FSC ash handle, hand-oiled with linseed oil, is comfortable even with gloves. The leather strap makes it easy to hang and store.

FAQ
What is the difference between the Felco 442 and a classic long-handled dandelion fork?
A long-handled dandelion fork is used standing up, leveraging against the ground surface. The Felco 442 is a hand tool: its snake-tongue blade penetrates deep alongside the root and levers it out whole, without disturbing surrounding soil. Ideal for precise work between plants or in tight spaces where a long-handled tool lacks control.
Does the Felco 442 work on all soil types?
Yes. The forged boron steel blade penetrates compacted and clay soils as easily as light soils. On very hard, dry ground, a little moisture beforehand — rain or watering — will make it easier to drive the blade in and ensures a complete root extraction.
What weeds can be removed with the Felco 442?
All deep tap-rooted weeds: dandelions, thistles, docks, tap-rooted couch grass, nettles, young bindweed. The blade shape is designed for long, thin taproots — less suited to bulbous or shallow fibrous root systems, for which a hoe is sufficient.
How do I avoid snapping the root during extraction?
Work on slightly moist soil, drive the blade alongside rather than through the root, and use a slow, progressive levering motion rather than a sharp pull. If the root resists, drive the blade a little deeper and repeat the levering movement.
