The Felco 401 is no ordinary trowel. Its forged boron steel blade — a harder, more wear-resistant alloy than standard carbon steel — is sharpened along its full length, from tip to handle. It cuts through soil effortlessly, even on compacted or clay-heavy ground, without straining or distorting the blade.

The handle, shaped from FSC-certified ash wood and hand-oiled with linseed oil (phthalate-free), provides a comfortable, long-lasting grip. Its teardrop form fits naturally in the palm, allowing extended work without fatigue or blistering. The leather strap fixed at the end adds a touch of elegance and makes the tool easy to hang up.

At 33 cm long and 265 g, the Felco 401 strikes the perfect balance between reach and precision. Use it to dig clean planting holes, transplant perennials and seedlings, set bulbs at the right depth — all with the care of a tool built to last a lifetime. Like all Felco tools, it comes with a lifetime guarantee.

ADVANTAGES

✅ Forged boron steel blade — harder and more wear-resistant than ordinary steel, holds its edge longer;

✅ Fully sharpened from top to bottom — penetrates soil effortlessly, even on dense ground;

✅ FSC ash wood handle, hand-oiled (linseed oil, phthalate-free) — comfort, durability, environmental responsibility;

✅ Leather strap — robust, practical for hanging the tool;

✅ 265 g / 33 cm — optimal lightness and reach for precise, fatigue-free work;

✅ Hand-crafted in the Netherlands by Felco — lifetime guarantee.

USE

  • Creating clean planting holes for bulbs, plug plants and seedlings;
  • Transplanting perennials and seedlings: extract and replant in one precise motion;
  • Row planting: mark and open the furrow cleanly before sowing or transplanting;
  • Use the blade as a depth guide — its known length lets you calibrate planting depth by eye;
  • Work with a wrist/forearm rotation rather than a pushing motion to protect your back during repetitive tasks.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

  • Rinse the blade after each use to prevent soil and moisture build-up;
  • Wipe dry before storing;
  • Occasionally hone with a small whetstone or fine steel to maintain sharpness;
  • Oil the wooden handle once or twice a year with linseed oil to nourish and protect the wood;
  • Store in a dry place, ideally hung up using the leather strap.

FAQ

What is forged boron steel and why is it used for the Felco 401?

Boron steel is an alloy steel containing a very small amount of boron, which significantly increases its hardness and wear resistance compared to ordinary carbon steel. Forged — shaped under heat and pressure — it is also denser and less porous than cast steel. For a dibber, this means a point that penetrates compacted soils better, resists impacts and does not deform over years of use.

Are the depth markings on the Felco 401 accurate?

Yes. The blade carries engraved graduation marks for quickly identifying insertion depth — useful for planting bulbs at the right depth or maintaining even spacing when dibbing in rows. They remain visible after years of use as they are engraved into the steel, not painted on.

Is the Felco 401 suitable for clay and compacted soils?

Yes — this is one of the situations where it really stands out. The forged boron steel point penetrates heavy soils without bending. On very dry, compacted ground, pre-watering makes it easier to insert and withdraw cleanly without the hole collapsing.

What is the difference between the Felco 401 and the Felco 441 Hori Hori for planting?

The Felco 401 is a specialist dibber: its conical shape with depth markings is optimised for creating a precise, clean hole at the right depth. The Felco 441 can also be used for planting, but it is a multi-purpose knife — it excels more at weeding, dividing clumps and cutting roots. For serial planting (bulbs, lettuce seedlings, plug plants), the 401 is faster and more accurate.
