A well-maintained garden tool lasts twice as long. Dried soil, light rust and plant residues that build up on blades, tines and tool bodies gradually accelerate corrosion and reduce performance. The Osborn HG301A3 brush is designed to clean all of that quickly, before or after each use.

Its 3 rows of Ø 0.35 mm smooth steel wire effectively remove compacted soil, sap build-up and light rust from spade and fork blades, hoes, weeders, garden knives, hori horis and workshop tools — without attacking sound metal or protective coatings. The curved design makes it easy to reach into corners, tool tines and handle/blade junctions where dirt accumulates.

The beech wood handle is comfortable even with gardening gloves on. At 295 mm long, this brush is easy to store in an apron, toolbox or hung on a workshop board.

HOW TO USE

  • Clean spade, fork, hoe and weeder blades after each session in the vegetable garden ;
  • Remove dried soil from fork tines, rakes and seed drill grilles ;
  • Eliminate light rust on stored tools before oiling ;
  • Clean sap and soil residue from pruning shear blades, hori horis and garden knives ;
  • Prepare metal surfaces in the workshop before applying protective oil or rust-inhibiting paint ;
  • Use dry or slightly damp depending on the residue to be removed.

MAINTENANCE

  • Rinse the brush under clean water after use on wet soil ;
  • Shake out and dry the wires before storing to prevent rust on the bristles ;
  • Store away from prolonged moisture ;
  • Check regularly that wires are not bent or broken — a worn brush loses effectiveness and may scratch surfaces.

FAQ

Can this brush damage my garden tool blades?

Not if used correctly. The Ø 0.35 mm smooth steel wires are sized to remove compacted soil, sap residue and light rust without scratching sound metal. Avoid pressing too hard on polished blades or PTFE/XYLAN coatings (such as those on Felco tools) — for sap on treated surfaces, a damp cloth is preferable.

Can this brush be used on Felco tools?

Yes, with care. On aluminium tool bodies (pruner handles, shear bodies), the brush is suitable for light cleaning. On XYLAN-coated blades or polished surfaces, a cloth or Felco 980 spray is preferable to avoid affecting the coating. The Osborn HG301A3 is best suited to forged components, soil-working tool blades and bare workshop surfaces.

What is the difference between this brush and a synthetic-bristle brush?

Steel wire bristles are stiffer and more abrasive than synthetic or nylon bristles — essential for removing hardened soil, rust or scale that a soft brush cannot shift. A synthetic brush is suited to gentle cleaning (handles, plastic coatings). For bare metal, the steel wire brush is far more effective.

How often should garden tools be cleaned?

Ideally after every use: a quick brush on still-wet blades, then a wipe and a few drops of oil. This 2-minute routine per tool multiplies their service life many times over. A brush like the Osborn HG301A3 is best kept permanently to hand in the tool bucket or hung on the garden shed wall.
