The Felco 31 is the go-to anvil pruner for demanding work: dead branches, very hard wood, or sappy material. Unlike a standard bypass pruner, its double-bevelled straight blade works against a flat screw-mounted brass anvil to concentrate maximum cutting force on a single point — delivering clean cuts through wood that would strain a conventional tool.
At 210 mm long and designed for large hands, the Felco 31 is equally suited to right- and left-handed users. The forged aluminium handles are lightweight, strong and guaranteed for life. A professional-grade tool for arborists, park keepers and anyone tackling hard pruning work.

FAQ
What is the difference between the Felco 31 anvil pruner and a bypass pruner like the Felco 2?
A bypass pruner (such as the Felco 2) cuts by the scissor action of two opposing blades — ideal for clean cuts on healthy living wood. The Felco 31 anvil pruner cuts by pressing a single blade down onto a flat brass plate, generating far greater cutting power — making it the right choice for dead branches, very hard or dried wood. On healthy green wood, a bypass pruner is preferred to avoid crushing the tissue.
Can left-handed users use the Felco 31?
Yes. The Felco 31's symmetrical anvil design makes it fully ambidextrous — no adjustment needed for left-handed use. This is a notable advantage over many bypass pruners, which are often available in right-hand versions only.
What tasks is the Felco 31 best suited for?
It excels in arboriculture (fruit tree pruning, dead wood removal), park maintenance (hedge clean-up after winter, dried branches) and any situation where a branch is too hard or dry for a standard pruner. Its 25 mm cutting capacity with anvil power makes it an ideal tool for restoration and renovation pruning.
How do you sharpen the Felco 31 blade?
Unlike a bypass pruner where only one bevel is sharpened, the Felco 31's blade is bevelled on both sides — so both faces must be sharpened equally using a diamond sharpener (Felco 903) or whetstone (Felco 902). Regular sharpening significantly extends blade life.
Can the anvil be replaced?
Yes. The brass anvil is a separate spare part, ref. 31/4. Before replacing it, check whether adjusting the screws (ref. 31/6 and 31/7) restores the correct clearance. All Felco spare parts are available from La Fabriculture.
